Remedial works at Monkswood and Bogma developments

Open Spaces enhance community areas through targeted remedial works at Durham developments.

As part of Open Spaces’ commitment to delivering high-quality residential estate management, extensive remedial works have been overseen at two key developments in Durham – Monkswood and Bogma Hall Farm.

Both projects were managed in partnership with Envirocare Grounds Maintenance to restore and enhance these shared public open spaces.

Monkswood | Sacriston, Durham – 200 units

Although still under developer control, Open Spaces instructed contractors to facilitate remedial works on behalf of the developer to ensure Monkswood’s green infrastructure is in a healthy condition by the time the site comes fully under Open Spaces management.

Key remedial works include:

  • Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDs) enhancement: Works focused on reducing the main SUDs. Thistles, weeds and rocks were removed, the ground was graded and levelled, and the area wildflower seeded to improve biodiversity.
  • Tidy-up and vegetation management: Mini SUDs cut back and tidied, hedges cut back, and the cornice trimmed for a cleaner appearance.
  • Tree and soil improvements: Twelve new trees were planted across the site, and 45 tonnes of clean, screened topsoil distributed in multiple locations to improve soil health and appearance.
  • Reseeding: Grass seeding applied in four targeted locations to establish or repair turf.

Bogma Hall | Coxhoe – 153 units

The Bogma Hall development formally came into Open Spaces’ management in summer 2025. A targeted remedial programme was implemented to address several maintenance and aesthetic issues.

Key remedial actions include:

  • SUDs management: Overgrown SUDs and the outer perimeter were cut back to restore visual quality. Embankments were wild seeded to enhance biodiversity.
  • Groundworks and seeding: Poor quality ground was dug up and topsoil and grass seed added. Brack, rocks and rubble were cleared followed by wild seeding to enable better plant growth.
  • Hedging and planting: Natural boundaries have been created with the planting and barking of hawthorn hedges, and eleven rowan trees were also introduced.
  • Finishing touches: A gravel strip was added, tree branches were cut back, and a waste pile removed from site. Grass cuts were also completed to neaten the space and encourage growth.
